Residential PPAs WA

The WA Government has announced a new exemption that will allow select solar providers to offer Power Purchase Agreements, or PPAs, to residential customers.

The State Government has relaxed former regulations in order to cut red tape, and to help more WA homeowners gain access to affordable renewable energy sources, according to Energy Minister Mike Nahan, "West Australians are embracing solar energy in unprecedented numbers and the State Government wants to ensure everyone has access to this exciting technology.

"By creating the exemption, we have broken down barriers, cut red tape and reduced the regulatory costs for solar PPA providers to offer electricity services to customers. This will help the emerging market to develop and increase the choices that customers have to access these innovative and renewable sources of electricity at an affordable price.”

Infinite Energy welcomes this initiative, which will allow wider access to cheaper, cleaner solar energy. It also supports the rigorous retail exemption application process that solar providers will need to undergo to be able to sell Residential PPAs. Customers, particularly low-income earners, can expect to be able to enter into PPA agreements with only the most dependable solar providers.

Residential PPAs Explained

Residential PPAs or Power Purchase Agreements give you all the benefits of solar, without the need for you to provide any capital outlay. In other words, a solar provider will install a system on your roof for $0 upfront.

You’ll enter into an agreement to buy all the electricity your system generates for a set period (7 and 10-year terms are common), at an agreed price. You don’t pay for the system, just the metered energy it produces.

Ownership of the system will remain with the solar provider for the entirety of the term, meaning you don’t have to worry about maintenance or potential faults.

At the end of the term, ownership of the system is transferred to you, and you’ll benefit from all the additional, free energy your solar system produces.

Infinite Energy PPA Product

Infinite Energy already offer PPAs to commercial customers in WA, with solar electricity rates as low as just 13 cents per kWh.

Infinite Energy hopes to offer the same PPA product to residential homeowners. With rates less than half of Synergy’s current residential A1 tariff (26.47 cents per kWh/unit), homeowners can expect to see substantial savings.

In what Infinite Energy sees as another big win for homeowners, those who enter a Residential PPA will still be eligible for The Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme, and receive 7 cents per kWh/unit for any electricity they export back into the grid.

Infinite Energy CEO, Shane Cremin, said the WA Government’s decision to remove regulations around selling residential PPAs is great news for homeowners, “Residential PPAs make solar much more accessible for all homeowners, regardless of whether or not they have the financial capacity to buy the system outright. Without the need to provide any capital outlay, almost all of the risk associated with investing in solar is removed.”

Infinite Energy will be working hard with the government for its retail licence exemption in order to bring Residential Solar PPAs to Western Australians as soon as possible.
