How to Improve Electricity Usage in Your Business

Written by Infinite Energy

The Clean Energy Council has launched a comprehensive guide for businesses to improve their electricity usage efficiency. The guide was launched at an event in Perth last week which Infinite Energy presented at.

Funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), the guide looks to help you manage your business’ electricity usage, demands and costs, in the most efficient way. It then enables business owners identify and address the most practical solutions for small – medium size enterprises (SME).

The guide analyses in-depth how, as a business owner, to understand the electricity usage of your SME;  how to take action in relation to reducing the operating cost of your business (demand – side management); and look at your options; solar power, device structuring, energy efficiency and electricity tariffs.

“Australia’s electricity supply is in a state of transition. For small to medium-sized businesses, this transition brings risks, but also opportunities – to lower operating costs, get an edge on your competition and differentiate your business by using new technologies”, says Clean Energy Council Chief Executive, Kane Thornton.

Demand – Side Management Solutions (DSM)

DSM solutions enable businesses to improve the way their business uses energy with a choice of simple solutions that are an easy way to reduce running costs.

Examples of DSM solutions:

  • energy efficiency
  • on-site renewable energy (embedded generation)
  • energy store (batteries)
  • load shifting (moving your energy consumption to a different time of day)

The solution most suitable to your business will depend upon a number of factors including; the businesses electricity usage, what type of electricity tariff you’re on, as well as your business premises. Each solution has its own environmental and financial benefit.

The guide’s objective is to provide businesses with information on how to manage and understand their electricity use in a more efficient way, thus enabling them to identify the right DSM solution for their business and then move forward and implement it.

The Clean Energy Council hopes that by making this information readily available to businesses, allowing them to make informed decisions, will in-turn protect them from the risks associated with the transition in our electricity supply.
