New Release: Canadian Solar HiKu Dual-Cell Panels

Canadian Solar continues to invest in research and development, recently launching a new panel as part of their Super High Mono-Perc range. The 350W – 375W Canadian Solar HiKu dual cell solar panel reaches one of the highest mono module power outputs in the solar industry. Combining superior technology and design, the panel produces up to 30% more power than conventional panels and offers better shade tolerance, increased reliability and higher performance in hot conditions.
Better Shade Tolerance
Thanks to the innovative split module design and dual cell technology, the HiKu solar panel has better shade tolerance, decreasing losses by up to 50%.
As demonstrated in the diagrams below, when one string of a standard panel is shaded you lose a full third of the panel's production ability. However, when a Canadian Solar HiKu panel is partially shaded, more surface area is still able to produce electricity. Similarly, if all strings on a standard solar panel are shaded, the panel can not produce any power, but in the same conditions, the Canadian Solar HiKu panel can still produce at 50%.
The Canadian Solar HiKu panel has a module efficiency of 19.46%, a 30% increase in efficiency compared to some lower wattage conventional panels.
Rather than using 24 x 275W solar panels to achieve a 6.5kW system size, only 18 x 360W Canadian Solar HiKu panels are required. Ideal for those with limited roof space.
The HiKu solar panel is considered a LIC (Low Internal Current) panel. This is beneficial as the lower internal current leads to a lower hotspot temperature.
Hotspot temperature occurs when there is one low current cell (usually caused by partial shading such as a bird dropping) in a string of several high current cells. The shaded cell creates an electrical traffic jam of sorts, resulting in a hotspot which can then lead to cell cracking and damage to the solar panel back-sheet.
The Canadian Solar HiKu panel effectively reduces the risk of this from occurring by having a lower internal current that is spread amongst the multiple strings of cells.
Multi-Busbar (MBB) Technology
Most solar panels have 3 - 5 metal ribbons (busbars) running across the cells. These are the pathways the solar electricity runs along. The new Canadian Solar HiKu panels have 9 busbars which reduces the electrical resistance along each pathway; similar to how more lanes on a highway reduces traffic congestion.
The round-shaped busbars of the Canadian Solar MBB cells also provide significant benefits over conventional cells with flat ribbon busbars. By increasing the scattering effect towards the cell surface, power is boosted from more sunlight hitting the cells.
Solar cells are very thin and brittle. During high winds, solar panel glass can wobble and flex causing micro-cracks within the solar cells. Cell micro-cracks can also form during shipping, handling or hail impact.
To prevent flexing glass and solar cell micro-cracks, the Canadian Solar HiKu is one of the few panels with a support bar across the back.
If a cell micro-crack does occur, the combination of Multi-Busbar and Dual-Cell technology reduces the area for a micro-crack to spread.
