where to install solar panel

If you’re considering solar for your home, you’re probably wondering where on your roof you should install your solar panels.

As the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the sun is at its strongest when it sits north in the sky at midday. Therefore, solar power systems can be installed on roofs facing anywhere from due east to due west, although we recommend north for best absolute production.

This is a general rule however, as there is no one size fits all solution. The best place to install your solar panels will depend on your electricity consumption pattern, and the external factors affecting your home.

Position Based on Your Electricity Consumption Patterns

Eastern Roof

If the morning is your busiest time of the day, it’s best to install panels on your eastern roof. This design is perfect for families who have busy mornings (think getting the kids ready for school, doing the washing and ironing, plus turning on the dishwasher), and arrive home close to sundown.

Western Roof

If the afternoon is your peak energy usage time, you’ll want to install your solar power system on your western roof. This is perfect for families who arrive home straight after school and start using the TV, computer, and other appliances.

Northern Roof

If you use the majority of your electricity from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, installing panels on the northern roof will give you the best return on your investment. This setup is ideal for stay at home parents, retirees, or those working from home.

Whole Roof

If your energy usage is not concentrated to particular time periods and is spread evenly throughout the day, purchasing a system over 4kW in size will give you the ability to evenly your panels across your roof. This will mean regardless of when you decide to use your appliances, your electricity usage will be supplemented by your solar PV system.

Position Based on External Factors

Your Existing Roof

Your existing roof is the biggest indication on where your panels will be positioned. For example, if you have only have free roof space facing west, this is where your panels will need to go.

In order to maximise your savings, you’ll have to adjust your existing electricity consumption patterns to suit your new system. For example, timing appliances like your dishwasher and washing machine to operate when your solar system is at maximum output.

Existing Shading

You can purchase the best quality system available, but if it spends the majority of the day under shade, it will not perform as expected.

Infinite Energy recommends either trimming back your trees, or if you’re unwilling/if they belong to your neighbours, we recommend choosing the side of your roof that has the least amount of shade.

As no two homes are the same, it’s important you consider your specific energy needs and situation. Infinite Energy can help you decide what way to face your solar panels, taking into account your roof space and lifestyle. For a no obligation quote, click here.
